Hatchimals are a line of mini-figures produced by Spin Master. They were first released in October 2016 and are designed as robotic animals that hatch themselves from plastic eggs. The toys were targeted at girls aged 6 to 8 but became popular among boys and older audiences as well. The unexpected demand for Hatchimals led to supply issues, with some customers complaining about defects with the toys. The Hatchimals CollEGGtibles, released in 2017, are small figures distributed in blind packaging. They come in plastic eggs with a heart on them that changes colour when heat is applied. With various species and growth stages, accessories, and spinoff lines, the number of plastic Hatchimals available seems extensive.

What You'll Learn

There are five original species of Hatchimal
Hatchimals are a line of mini-figures produced by Spin Master. They were first released in October 2016 and quickly became popular, with high demand and limited stock. The flagship toys are mini-figures that come packaged in a plastic egg. The toys are robotic animals representing one of several species that hatch themselves from the egg.
There were five original species of Hatchimal: Penguala, Draggle, Bearakeet (a Target exclusive), Owlicorn (a Toys "R" Us exclusive), and Burtle (Walmart exclusive). Each Hatchimal has an element assigned to it: sky, ice, water, or fire. The eyes of the Hatchimal change colour depending on how it is feeling, and when the egg is ready to hatch, the eyes flash rainbow.
After the initial release, the line expanded to include various spin-offs, including Hatchimals CollEGGtibles, small versions of the original Hatchimals introduced in 2017. These spin-offs also come in plastic eggs, with a heart on the egg that changes colour when heat is applied. The wings of the first eight CollEGGtibles seasons indicate the rarity of that figure, with most releases featuring glittery wings.
The original Hatchimals line ended in 2019, but a reboot called Hatchimals Alive! was released in October 2024.

The eggs are a bluish white with a solid purple heart. The second season introduced many new Hatchimal species and some new locations.
Season 6.5 had similar pack types to season six. The egg carton in this season is teal or cyan and comes with exclusive fluffy kittycan Hatchimals. This season only had two pack types, making it the only season with no one pack and no egg carton. There was a two-pack with one Hatchimal in an egg and one out.

Hatchimal Pixies
The Hatchimals Pixies are a spin-off of the original Hatchimals line of electronic toys. The Pixies were released in April 2019 and feature chibi-style fairy characters with interchangeable headbands and accessories. The Pixies have wings made of a gummy material that flutters when touched.
The first series of Hatchimals Pixies featured four different egg colours, each corresponding to a different location in Hatchtopia. Each egg contained one of two different pixies, meaning there were eight pixies in total in this series. Each pixie came with a headband, two other accessories, and a bed at the bottom of the egg that varied depending on the pixie's location.
The second series of Hatchimals Pixies was released later in 2019, featuring more formal outfits and moulded-on shoes. This series also included four different egg colours, with two possible pixies each, for a total of eight pixies. The eggs in this series were not based on locations and instead featured a dance floor at the bottom.
The third series, released in 2020, had a vacation theme, with each pixie's outfit inspired by a popular tourist destination. Each pixie came in a glittery suitcase with accessories that could be "hatched" from smaller suitcases. This series introduced the pink and purple passport types, with five possible pixies in each type, for a total of ten pixies.
The fourth series, also released in 2020, was candy-themed and featured new wing shapes for the pixies. This series returned to the format of four egg types with two pixies each.
The fifth series, released in 2021, featured large fabric wings and transparent eggs. This series had a 1 in 10 chance of including a ring and included six pixies in total.
In addition to the main Hatchimals Pixies line, there are three spin-offs: Hatchimals Pixies Riders, Mini Pixies, and Crystal Flyers. The Pixies Riders feature twin baby pixies with sparkly details, fluttery wings, and poseable heads, along with a baby Hatchimals Glider they can ride.

Hatchtopia Life
The original Hatchimals line included five species: Penguala, Draggle, Bearakeet (Target exclusive), Owlicorn (Toys "R" Us exclusive), and Burtle (Walmart exclusive). Each species had two variations for boy (blue) and girl (pink) Hatchimals. In 2017, following the initial success of the first release, Spin Master introduced Hatchimals CollEGGtibles, which are small figures distributed in blind packaging.
The Hatchimals line ended in 2019 with Hatchimals WOW, but a new reboot called Hatchimals Alive! was released in October 2024. The reboot includes eight species: Ponette, Cheetree, Chipadee (Amazon exclusive), Koalabee (Walmart exclusive), Foxfin (Walmart Black Friday exclusive), Monkiwi (Target exclusive), Unikeet, and Kitsee. Each Hatchimal in this line has an element assigned to it: sky, ice, water, or fire.
The Hatchimals toys were incredibly popular and sparked a frenzy among children and parents alike. They were compared to other major toy phenomena, such as Cabbage Patch Kids, Tickle Me Elmo, and Furby. The high demand for the toys led to supply issues, with some customers complaining about defects and issues with the hatching process. Despite these issues, the toys occupied multiple spots on NPD Group's top ten list of best-selling toys in the United States in late October 2016.

Hatchimals are packaged in plastic eggs
Hatchimals are a line of mini-figures produced by Spin Master. They were launched on 7 October 2016, and the flagship toy features an egg. The main selling point of Hatchimals is that they come packaged in plastic eggs and will hatch by themselves after being played with for long enough. The eyes of the Hatchimal change colour depending on how it is feeling, and when the egg is ready to hatch, the eyes flash rainbow. The hatching process involves interacting with the egg over a period of time. Once the Hatchimal is hatched, you can play games with it, feed it, tickle it, and teach it to talk.
The original Hatchimals are large, robotic animals representing various species. They are designed to hatch themselves from their plastic eggs, and the mechanism for this hatching process was a key part of the toy's design. The plastic eggs are interactive, and the Hatchimal must be cuddled, tapped, lifted, and rocked until the egg glows rainbow and magical mist appears.
The success of the original Hatchimals spawned various spinoffs, including smaller versions called Hatchimals CollEGGtibles, which are also packaged in plastic eggs. These smaller Hatchimals were introduced in 2017 and typically distributed in blind packaging. The plastic eggs feature a heart on the outside that changes colour when heat is applied. The wings of the first eight seasons of CollEGGtibles indicate the rarity of that figure, with most releases featuring glittery wings.
Hatchimals CollEGGtibles have also been released in packs of two, four, and twelve, with the twelve packs coming in plastic egg cartons. These cartons are gem-shaped, with the bottom part able to be removed to store accessories. The plastic eggs in these cartons are sometimes replaced with plastic Easter egg-type things that hold the crackable egg inside.
