Manufacturing plastics products

Plastics are the most common materials for producing end-use parts and products, from consumer goods to medical devices. They are versatile, with thousands of polymer options, each with unique mechanical properties.

There are eight different plastic-forming methods, each used for a specific reason, though they can be combined to create more complex parts. The main types of plastic are thermoplastics and thermosets.

One of the most common manufacturing processes is plastic injection moulding, where liquid plastic resin is injected into a forming die cavity, taking on the shape of the interior surface. When cooled, the die opens and the finished part is ejected. This method is stable and reliable, accounting for more than 80% of common plastic items, with excellent surface finishes and low costs. However, moulds can be expensive and complex.

Another method is rotational moulding, which uses a core and cavity mould tool. The raw material is pre-heated and placed inside the open cavity, and a cap or plug is used to apply heat and pressure, causing the plastic to cure. This process is relatively inexpensive and wastes little material but controlling the consistency of the finished piece can be challenging.

Vacuum forming or thermoforming is another manufacturing method, where plastic is heated and formed using a mould. This process has design constraints and finished products have looser tolerances. As the entire mould must be heated and cooled, it is quite labour-intensive and has long cycle times.

Finally, 3D printing allows companies to create plastic parts and rapid prototypes in-house. FDM melts a plastic filament, SLA cures liquid resin, and SLS fuses powdered plastic. 3D printing requires no tooling and minimal setup time, but it is generally slower and more labour-intensive than traditional manufacturing processes.

NAICS Code system

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is a classification system used by the US Government for statistical classification, compilation, and analysis. It was developed in cooperation with Canada and Mexico and introduced in 1997. NAICS uses a six-digit hierarchical coding system to classify all economic activity into twenty industry sectors, with five sectors being goods-producing and fifteen being services-providing.

NAICS is used to group establishments into industries based on the primary activity in which they are engaged. Establishments using similar raw material inputs, similar capital equipment, and similar labour are classified in the same industry. The system is designed to keep pace with the changing economy and is reviewed for potential revisions every five years. During this review process, suggestions for new and emerging industries can be submitted to the Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC).

NAICS codes are assigned to businesses by statistical agencies based on information provided by the business on forms, reports, or surveys. Some agencies assign multiple NAICS codes to a single establishment. The NAICS United States Structure can be used to search for the appropriate code by searching for the relevant industry at the 2-digit level and then moving down to the more detailed 6-digit level. Alternatively, the Alphabetic Index can be used to search for the primary activity and its corresponding code.

NAICS provides a tool to ensure that economic statistics reflect the changing economy, but improved statistics can result in time series breaks. It is important to note that NAICS categories and definitions were not developed for procurement or regulatory applications, and federal agencies, trade associations, and regulation boards that use NAICS for these purposes may find that it does not entirely fit their specific needs.
